West Side Park Neighborhood

A New Community Vision

West Side Park was created in 1895 as part of the Essex County Park System in New Jersey, the oldest county park system in the nation. Rhodeside & Harwell has worked closely with City of Newark and Essex County representatives and civic leaders to help restore the 31-acre park, originally designed by the firm of the Olmsted Brothers, and prepare a revitalization plan for the surrounding community. With the park as a neighborhood centerpiece, the revitalization effort has focused on creating a new community vision that addresses compatible development and services along with regulatory and policy strategies to help effect this promising transformation.
