St. Petersburg Celebrates Waterfront Parks Centennial

Rhodeside & Harwell's Ed Hamm, ASLA, will soon take part in Downtown St. Petersburg's year-long Waterfront Parks Centennial celebration. Hamm will lead a design team presentation on December 15, exploring a vision for the historic Florida community's waterfront in another 100 years. Concepts will address rising sea levels and potential urban consequences for this distinctive area, originally envisioned in one of the nation's first comprehensive plans.

The DC Chapter of Advancing Women in Transportation (WTS) recently hosted its "Livability Agenda and Transportation" event. The program included presentations from the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. All three agencies are part of the ambitious "Partnership for Sustainable Communities" initiative. Rhodeside & Harwell sponsored the event, which included a focus on the importance of transit as a central component of smart growth.
New Jersey Office Celebrates Five Years

Rhodeside & Harwell has announced that its downtown Newark office, which has been an active project office for the past five years, is now permanent. The office has completed several projects in the region, including award-winning work at Essex County Branch Brook Park and in Cape May, New Jersey.

The new, 448,000-square-foot civil and forensic hospital on the historic St. Elizabeths campus in Washington, D.C., has been recognized with a
Mid-Atlantic Construction Award of Merit. Rhodeside & Harwell provided planning and landscape architecture for the new hospital, working with Einhorn Yaffee Prescott Architects and Tompkins Builders.
Meredith Judy, Transportation and Land Use Planner, Joins Rhodeside & Harwell

Meredith Judy, AICP, LEED AP, a planner with extensive experience in urban and regional transportation initiatives, has joined Rhodeside & Harwell. Meredith is currently serving as project manager on the firm's contract with the Virginia Department of Transportation to assist communities with the commonwealth's new Urban Development Areas requirements.

Street Festival Highlights 17th Street Makeover in DC

The DC Department of Transportation unveiled the new streetscape along 17th Street, NW, on September 25 with a lively festival and celebration. The project, which focused on the 17th Street corridor between Massachusetts Avenue and New Hampshire Avenue, includes amenities such as landscaping, lighting, and street furniture while also improving access and safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles.
New Sports Fields Open at Hellwig Park

Prince William County, Virginia, celebrated the expansion of new sports fields at the George S. Hellwig Memorial Park on September 25, 2010. Rhodeside & Harwell led the design of the expansion project, which includes three new 60-foot diamond fields, a 90-foot diamond field, and additional parking.
Protecting the Forest at Eagle Rock Reservation

Rhodeside & Harwell has designed five forest regeneration sites within Newark, New Jersey's 408-acre Eagle Rock Reservation. The enclosures, part of the Deer Management Program in Essex County, will help restore forested stands, enhance bio-diversity, and improve natural stormwater management within this urban preserve. "Singular Landscapes"
July 2010 - Landscape Architecture
Landscape Architecture magazine features several Rhodeside & Harwell projects in "The Washington Outsider," a panorama of the region's most notable landscapes. Projects include the D.C. ArtWalk, Olmsted's Summer House on the US Capitol grounds, the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum at the National Arboretum, and Meridian Hill Park.
The article appears in the July issue of Landscape Architecture.
Rhodeside & Harwell to Lead Tour at 2010 ASLA Annual Meeting in D.C.

Rhodeside & Harwell Associate Principal Edward Hamm, ASLA, will help lead a tour of “Modern Landscapes in the Nation’s Capital” during the ASLA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Tour highlights range from the dynamic Penn Quarter district to the Potomac River waterfront.

Architects Anonymous Looks to Transform Arlandria Site

A team of local designers, including Rhodeside & Harwell led by Principal Kevin Fisher, is helping to transform the site of the former Duron Paint Store into a community center along Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia. Set in the Arlandria neighborhood near Four Mile Run, the property will provide much-needed open space while the old paint store will be converted to a community space featuring green technology and building components.

HITT Earns Acclaim for New Headquarters

HITT Contracting's new Fairview Park headquarters in Falls Church, Virginia, has been called a "green paradise loaded with employee perks." Designed by Noritake, with landscape design by Rhodeside & Harwell, the project minimized site disturbance and features drought-resistant native plantings in a lush rain garden setting that treats stormwater runoff.
